Re: Edward Elric | Fullmetal Alchemist

[personal profile] alchemygeek 2011-12-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Ed generally leaves one of two impressions when he meets someone new, that he is a petulant brat in need of some anger management, or that he is a conceited know-it-all who doesn't know his own limits. To some degree, both of these impressions are true, though it is also true that Ed very much improves upon acquaintance.

Because he is a very blunt person, Ed doesn't believe in sugar coating what he says, and in fact almost seems unable to whenever he tries to do so. This can cause him to come off as harsher than he intends, but also reveals his honest nature. Ed doesn't like to manipulate the truth and would rather tell a hard fact than a soft lie. He's seen the way soft lies can hurt people and has found it worse than when a hard truth causes pain.

It should be said that Ed is secretly a big softy, and though he often tries to hide it, it doesn't take much to bring it out of him. He often roots for the underdog and has a very soft spot for children. Should a situation touch close to home, as it did in Youswell, his sympathy (and ire) is all the more strongly raised. Even though the miner has been rude to him, their situation reminded him of his own and he went to some length to right the wrong being done to the town.

That isn't to say he doesn't have a sharp side to him. His temper is rather notorious among those who know him, but it’s important to make the distinction between Ed having a mild tantrum that he'll forget five minutes later (ie. thinking someone has slighted his height, which he’s gotten a lot better about) and Ed actually going into full No Holds Barred Beatdown mode (ie. Tucker and Father). Ed's temper flares quickly and it flares hot, but the only time it lasts more than thirty seconds is when he is well and truly pissed off.

Ed also has a wicked sense of humor and delights in using it against someone who has annoyed him. Again, see Yousewell and the way he tricked Yoki into giving him the deed to the mine. Ed doesn't pull punches and his puckish sense of humor shows in the tactics he uses when he fights. At Briggs, he gave an evil grin before transmuting ammonia gas to overpower the sensitive animal noses of his opponents. And in Central, he played at being the victim before knocking out some guards, again with an evil glint in his eyes. It's not just that he uses his intelligence as he fights, but he enjoys turning tables with ruthless glee.

And Ed if very intelligent. By the age of five, he and his brother had taught themselves the basics of alchemy, a feat that amazed their mother. She correctly observed that her sons' accomplishment would have caused no small insult to some adult alchemists. Throughout the series, Ed displays his intelligence in various ways. Though his clapping alchemy is what caused him to be hailed as a genius, the way in which he uses his alchemy is extremely varied, and points to his vast scientific understanding. The fact that at five years of age Ed and his brother were getting into their father's books points to a deep thirst for knowledge, and thirst that remains with him even as he gets older.

Ed's intelligence isn't just bound to alchemy, though it's often related. His code breaking/making skills are an example of this. All alchemists code their notes. Marcoh codes his as recipes, Mustang codes his with the names of women, and Ed codes his as a travelogue. Despite the fact Al is his brother and knows his mind better than anyone else, even Al can't read Ed's alchemy notes. From this we can deduce that Ed probably did most of the cracking during the ten days it took him and Al to break Marcoh's code.

[personal profile] alchemygeek 2011-12-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Due to his rather strong love of science and logic, Ed might seem a cynic to some and a pessimist to others. But it is merely that his mind works in a very rational and logical way, often following his own brand of rationalization. Ed rarely jumps into anything blind, first examining a situation with a keen observing eye. Alchemy requires sharp observation skills, which Ed possesses in spades. In the middle of his State Alchemist test, he spotted Mustang's reaction to his threat on Bradley, despite the fact most of his attention was on the President. Not that this kept Ed from being unable to see Bradley cut his spear to pieces, even though he'd been looking right at him.

Despite willingly becoming a State Alchemist, Ed has a lot of issues with authority. Blindly following orders without question does not sit well with him, but at the same time Ed respects and admires the trust that Mustang's men place in him, a trust that to some extent he shares. Because he's been independent for most of his life, Ed is pretty suspicious of anyone who tries to exert authority over him, which has only gotten worse thanks to finding out just how corrupt the military really was. This is often when Ed is his most petulant, which can also be due to the fact many people in the military did not take him seriously because of his age.

The fact he joined the military at the age of twelve says a lot about Ed's determination though. State Alchemists were considered sell-outs to much of the alchemy community, including his own teacher. But Ed joined anyway, willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order to gain the privileges that came with being a State Alchemist, privileges he hoped would help him restore his and Al's bodies. At one point he even makes the comment that for the sake of survival he would bow down to an enemy (though only for a moment), and he's relatively sincere in the statement. For Ed, his determination to survive can trump his pride.

Despite this, and despite his very rational approach to life, Ed has an extremely strong sense of right and wrong, and he doesn't allow himself to blur the line between the two. When offered a guaranteed chance to get his and Al's bodies back, Ed turned it down, because not only would it mean using the lives of thousands of people who hadn't deserved their fact, but it also meant bloodying his hands with even more lives first. Even though it'd be so much easier to take the easy way out, Ed refuses to compromise his morals and let others pay for his mistakes. So he has a bit of a martyr complex. There are worse ways to live your life.

Sample Entry: [he looks at the camera on his phone and gives a little grin]

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this thing. No more accidental phone calls or shit.

[and then his expression gets a bit serious, and his tone loses the cheerful edge]

Anyway, I was wondering, is there a library here? It's kind of driving me mad, not being able to remember stuff, and I just get the feeling that if I could read something familiar it might jog my memory... I feel like there's something really important I'm forgetting. And I don't mean the whole 'cannot remember my past' bit. I mean, I feel like there's something I'm supposed to be doing, right now. But I dunno what it is...

Character Name: Yuta Takizawa
Character Series: Alive: The Final Evolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alive:_The_Final_Evolution)
Background: His portion of the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alive:_The_Final_Evolution#Protagonist) and Alive Wiki page (http://alive.wikia.com/wiki/Yuta_Takizawa). I can write more if necessary.
Point in Canon: Chapter 81, right before Mitama activates the system.
Personality: Yuta is a really smart kid. No, seriously. As an 8 year old at the start of the series, he quickly becomes the team’s intelligent character. While his friends have practical and fighting skills, he is the one who points out any problems in logic along the way – something extremely helpful when the team leader is kind of a huge idiot. Throughout the series he is the one who most often identifies the superhuman abilities of other power users, on some occasions after seeing it in use only a single time. When encountering an ice power user, he quickly realizes that her ability allows her not only to create spikes of ice, but spikes of ice that will go on to freeze other liquids nearby. When team leader Taisuke drags him into a forest to escape, he is the one to first figure out just how screwed they will be if they can’t find a better hiding place.

Because he is so intelligent and knows it, Yuta can come off as a bit bratty. He looks down upon those who aren’t as smart as him, and will tease them relentlessly. He definitely has a mischievous side to him, and this side comes out strongest around those who annoy him. As far as he’s concerned, it’s okay to cause minor troubles for someone who annoys him. It’s like his way of getting revenge for all the times they have troubled him by being irritating. Incidentally, this has nothing to do with respect; he can easily respect and even like a person, but if they have some sort of bothersome quirk, he’ll still pick on them for it.

That said, should any strong sisterly or motherly characters be around him, he probably won’t mess with them. After the death of his own mother in front of his eyes, he tends to attach himself to older, clearly responsible people. It is around these folks that he will act the most like a happy child, with snarking held in reserve. It gives him an opportunity to be the kid he is, and he appreciates it.

Lastly, there is the matter of his callousness. Each power user was granted an ability when they survived the call to death. This is because each power user had some sort of “hole” in their heart, which allowed them to avoid being overwhelmed by the force that drove most to suicide. In Yuta’s case, it was his callousness. This isn’t to say he is incapable of feeling – throughout the series he develops some very strong attachments to other characters. But he is able to separate himself from others, to the point of even being able to look at his mother’s suicide and analyze it – what caused her to die, whereas he survived? His power reflects this in that it is the power of “isolation”; he can create psychic boxes that completely isolate whatever is inside from the outside world, and can even remove it from the view of other supernatural entities.

Character Name: Rudolph van Richten
Character Series: Ravenloft: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenloft
Background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_van_Richten#Rudolph_van_Richten
Point in Canon: Middle of his career, so he has published some Guides, and is still actively hunting monsters (and still hates all Vistani). He is also starting to become aware that people he likes tends to die horribly.
Personality: Rudolph Van Ritchen is a Scholar. He spent most of his early adulthood as a Doctor, gaining the occupation after getting interested in herbalism from his Grandmother, and had been at the top of his classes in school, spending hours pouring over books. When his son Erasmus was alive, he helped his child study his schoolbooks, and had planned on teaching him medicine until the tragedy happened.

As a Monster Hunter, his expertise laid primarily in information, studying and picking apart legends, interviewing the few cooperative monsters (while being rightfully suspicious of some information), unearthing old tomes – including ancient journals of liches and vampires, and going out into the field so to speak. His research are bundled into several treatises and guidebooks, each giving an in-depth focus on a particular type of unnatural creature – the creation of, the physiology and psychology of the beasts, their various powers, how to protect oneself from them, and most importantly, the cure (if there is one) and/or the destruction of the beast. He only publishes each work after exhaustive research; Rudolph can be a perfectionist, but considering what his research is about – it’s not surprising he that would exhaust all avenues to make sure they’re just right.

He just wished people would use his guides as preventive measures, instead of an excuse to march headlong into the monster’s den.

Van Richten views himself as a man who is raising a lantern in the dark, someone just trying to illuminate a dark and oft scary world. He has no illusions about heroics and will sharply rebuke any companion who gets too cocky.

Surprisingly for a Monster Hunter – especially one with such a personal tragedy in his past, Rudolph isn’t that much of a zealot. Over his years of stalking monsters, he found that many are unfortunate victims of circumstances who can no longer control themselves, doomed to want what they can never have, or otherwise became a danger to society. He tries to find cures, though so far only afflicted lycanthropes could be cured, the rest he puts out of their misery in whatever way he can – minimizing the pain whenever possible. Whenever Rudolph is on the road, he will listen to concerns of people, offering sage advice – and if the situation is dire enough, he will grab his kit and help out. Sometimes it’s as simple as checking a child’s illness, or as complicated as extracting someone from the Nightmare Court’s grasp. In any rate, if he can help, he’ll never turn his back on someone, doing it all as a mix of wanting to do what’s right, and to make up for his many failures in the past.

However, monsters that enjoy inflicting harm on others will get his enmity – he will be absolutely ruthless in hunting these monsters, pushing himself beyond his limits, and making the life for these creatures a living hell until he could finally destroy them. He’s very reluctant to harm human agents of these creatures, even if they seem completely willing in their aid to the monster – he tries to coax them to give up, or render them unconscious before resorting to more drastic measures.

As his history indicates, Van Richten can be a vengeful man when his loved ones are hurt, often losing his calm, measured demeanor in acts of fury. Due to the curse that the Radanavich clan placed on him, his friends and loved ones had been picked off one by one – instilling an overprotective streak in the man that causes him to hold people back if he feels they're recklessly endangering himself, and fuel the deep

Sample Entry:

[Van Richten had more or less taken over a section of the library and scouring over all the books about the region that he could find. Finally, he turns on that funny communication device he was given and starts speaking]

I have been told that many of you had encountered creatures that you later on remembered as being from your world. Would you mine stopping by the library so I can interview you?

I just want to make sure all the information we’ll need is readily available – but if sharing knowledge just for the sake of others is not your thing I am willing to pay for it.

[His tone suggests however he’ll think less of the person if they demanded compensation then trails off not realizing he hasn’t turned the device off]

Funny how familiar this seems…

Character Name: Arturia Pendragon/Saber
Character Series: Fate/Stay Night: Wikipedia page and Page on the TypeMoon wiki
Background: Saber's page, Fate route page.

Point in Canon: Fate/Stay Night is a Visual Novel with three branching paths. I'm going to take Saber from her own personal path which is titled "Fate." A link to its specific page on the Type Moon wiki is listed above.

[personal profile] promised_victory 2012-01-09 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Forewarning: Forgive me if I switch between the names Arturia and Saber a lot.

The thing you need to know about Arturia is first and foremost she is a warrior. When in battle she is utterly merciless and fights to kill. The only reasons her moves are showy at all is due to the medium she's from. Every battle is another obstacle in her goal and she will not let anything get in the way of it. Every ally is a potential enemy and every friend could be someone waiting to stab her in the back. A warrior is how she identifies most of all and the core of who she is. It's something no one should forget.

And yet her ultimate goal in the Holy Grail War is to obtain the Holy Grail to make a wish and redo her life, allowing someone besides herself to become King of England. Saber thinks herself a horrible king due to how Camelot came to fall and her people turning on her. After all, she spent her entire life focused on nothing but Camelot and sacrificed everything: her desires, her dreams, even her humanity, for the sake of her kingdom. And she feels she utterly failed in this despite England's brief period of prosperity under her. During the Fate route, she learns to accept her life and her reign and inevitably goes back to her own time to die in peace.

Which leads to her leadership skills. Saber can be an effective leader when she needs to be, but due to her issues with her reign over Camelot, chooses not to be. She is not an arrogant woman who will dismiss others input in strategy and is willing to defer completely to those more knowledgeable than she is. She would not have survived for as long as she has if did, both as the King of England and as a Servant.

This does not mean she isn't a prideful or stubborn person. In fact, this could be one of the cores of her personality. Arturia is a person who hates being coddled and treated as weak or inferior or having people make decisions for her. Even if they are from a purely logical standpoint valid concerns and choices that need to be made.

Since most of her identity revolves around her being a knight in social situations she is rather lacking. Arturia is very introverted and guarded with her emotions and can be uncomfortable when the topic of her gender comes up. While she's not uncomfortable with dressing or appearing femininely she prefers to be thought of as a knight first and a woman second. She loves food and to eat since the food in her time was not very good and she feels modern food is delicious or Shirou is just that epic a cook. Probably both.

Character Name: Ran Yakumo
Character Series: Touhou Project
Background: Main Touhou wiki page, and her Perfect Memento in Strict Sense entry.
Point in Canon: Post Ten Desires. This is more to keep up with events than anything; Ran's relevance after silent Sinner in Blue is debatable.
Personality: In a land of lazy bums, bored powerhouses and fiendishly clever manipulators, Ran is something of an anomaly. Very few members of Gensokyo could be described as "mild-mannered," and yet Ran fits that to a T. Unlike most members of Gensokyo, she never fights for the sake of amusing herself, or establishing her own power. If she fights, it is only because she perceives combat as a necessity, either to right a wrong or to defend those to whom she's loyal. This is not only weird for kitsune, who are notorious in mythology for being both devilishly nasty tricksters and highly dangerous to humans, but it's weird for GENSOKYO, which can't seem to go a year or two without somebody stirring things up for the hell of it, and where blasting each other with hundreds of little magic bullets is just the residents' way of saying "hi."

Part of this is due to her connections to Yukari. She is a shikigami, a magically bound servant similar in fashion to a familiar. Furthermore, a kitsune, once she has formed a bond of loyalty, remains loyal for life. Ran, having been Yukari's shikigami since a very young age, has grown up with this sense of loyalty, which seems to have significantly tempered her more "kitsune" attributes. Mythologically, she is a kitsune more in the framework of a zenko fox, the more benevolent form of the species. Either way, she does not act like one would expect of a creature of her type, let alone one who has grown old enough, intelligent enough, and wise enough not only to have grown all nine tails, but to take on a shikigami of her own despite being enslaved to someone else. Make no mistake; she may be motherly and gentle, but she's still one of the most powerful people in Gensokyo, and even more so the closer in proximity to Yukari she is.

However, do not mistake "gentle" for "dull-witted." Ran is a shikigami, but she's YUKARI'S shikigami, and while she is still light years behind her master in terms of cunning, she is still more than capable of manipulating events in a very calculating way if the opportunity provides. She will generally be more straight-forward and open than her master, but provide her ample reason to and she can be a cunning trickster with the best of them. Her only downside is that she is surprisingly poor at thinking outside the box. She is very good at utilizing tools already established and expanding on them, but not so good at coming up with her own ideas. This may change as she grows smarter, but for now she prefers to rely on classic knowledge.

This also ties into her sense of honor and loyalty. She grows annoyed at people who talk out of line, and who attempt to usurp the natural order of things. Ran respects her elders and respects those who demonstrate greater power than she, and does not tolerate backtalk from those who are still growing up. Ranks and power should be earned, not assumed. She will patiently tutor and train those who aspire to greater things, but while she may be patient like a mother, she also can carry the anger of one, and will punish accordingly -- and likewise accept punishment where it is due. After all, actions carry consequences. Yukari has trained her in this well enough.

Sample Entry: http://testrun-box.dreamwidth.org/2896.html?view=85584&posted=1#cmt85584

Extra Notes: Due to the severence of her connection to Yukari, Ran's power when she regains it will be reduced, albeit only from an Ex-Boss level to a 6th Stage boss sort of thing.
