Ryoma thinks of his childhood with nothing but fondness.
So naturally when a fellow by the name of Dr. Saotome went on the hunt for insane badasses to pilot his new combining super robot, Getter Robo, and fight oni with it, Ryoma was his first recruit. Ryoma soon found himself shoved into the cockpit of the Eagle Get Machine, making him the primary pilot of Getter Robo's Getter-1 form. He then aided in the recruitment of Getter-2's pilot, Hayato Jin, a socipathic super-genius terrorist, and then Getter-3's pilot, Benkei Musashibo, a Buddhist monk who's just far too sane for this horseshit.
Curious about where the oni came from and, more to the point, eager to bring the fight to them instead of just hanging around waiting for them to show up, Ryoma piloted Getter Robo into one of the portals oni appeared from and found himself in the Heian Era with no Getter Robo, Hayato, or Benkei in sight. He soon ended up in cahoots with oni-slayer Raikou Minamoto against the oni's apparent boss, Seimei Abe. Ryoma launched a solo on-foot attack against Seimei's Dark Heian Capital that eventually ended with him meeting up again with Hayato, Benkei, and Getter Robo; Seimei defeated; and Raikou dead. The ruined remains of the Dark Heian Capital collapsed into another oni portal, through which the Getter Team managed to return to Saotome Labs... three years after they left.
Dr. Saotome had not been idle in these three years, though, and promptly had Getter Robo's reactor replaced with an upgraded one, which Ryoma soon took out for a solo test-drive, knocking himself out from the acceleration, upon which he had an intense vision of a future in which mankind fused with Getters and things were Pretty Awful. Dream or not, this was the first and probably only thing that had ever really scared the shit out of Ryoma and he promptly quit the Getter Team to make sure it didn't become reality.
Too bad Seimei turned out to not actually be dead and his fight with Getter Robo forced Ryoma back into the cockpit. Not long after Seimei's defeat for real this time, his bosses showed up, four mysterious beings claiming to be gods, with bullshit powers to match. Getter Robo was doing poorly until Dr. Saotome opened the floodgates on the massive store of Getter Rays under Saotome Labs, also opening the way to a weird pocket universe thing that the fight promptly moved to. Here, the extremely high level of Getter Rays caused Ryoma to go absolutely batshit psycho on the "gods", until Hayato and Benkei brought him back down to vaguely sane levels and they beat the "gods" properly as a super badass team.
And then the literally impossibly huge Getter Emperor showed up and Ryoma decided that he absolutely had to fight that motherfucker, so he separated the Eagle from the other two thirds of Getter Robo and blasted off in Getter Emperor's direction while Hayato and Benkei returned to Earth. Canon implies that he then spends the rest of eternity fighting Getter Emperor. Point in Canon: Post-canon
