Character Name: Vriska Serket
Character Series: Homestuck (http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Homestuck)
Background: http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Vriska
Point in Canon: Immediately following being backstabbed by Terezi. So, late Act 5-2.
Personality:
Image

...okay, in all seriousness, it's true, Vriska really is a huge bitch. While this is true of most trolls, she takes it up to the next level in a wide variety of ways. Her primary passtime is manipulating people into doing her bidding. Oh, murder, too. She's killed hundreds of people and fed them to her enormous spider guardian. She also murders at one other named character in cold blood, and arranges events that lead to the deaths of many more. She brings about the genesis of the monster that destroyed her world, just so that she could be the one to defeat it. She once built a building for her wheelchair-bound friend entirely out of staircases. Vriska is a monster, and not only knows it, but revels in the fact.

Of course, there's more to it than that. While she is definitely horrible, she's far from as horrible as she'd like you to think. She often tries to reconcile friendships broken by her past atrocities, and is genuinely sad when she fails. Most of the killing she does is because otherwise, the aforementioned giant spider would starve to death, leaving her alone in the world and ripe for the culling. She actually resents it for forcing her to kill so many people. Does this make her a good person? Heavens, no, but it's enough to make the judgment of "evil" a bit harder to place.

At her core, Vriska can best be described as a self-loathing massive failure. Her manipulation skills are far below how she percieves them; she can seldom manipulate anyone without resorting to using psychic powers on them, and is often manipulated by others without realizing it. She refuses to accept responsibility for her actions much of the time, instead complaining at length about her own terrible 'luck,' which is often the direct results of her own actions. If a massive explosion kills your guardian, maybe you shouldn't have suspended a doomsday device above it. She likes having people to be close to, but constantly pushes people away from herself and burns the bridges behind them by being a raging asshole. When hounded or stressed, she is prone to sudden bouts of self-directed insults.

And this brings us to the subject of relationships. Troll relationships are very complicated (http://smell-no-evil.livejournal.com/526.html), and Vriska's self-destructive tendencies don't make them any simpler. With her endless mean streak, you might think that she'd be very successful at black romance, but you'd be wrong - since she sort of hates the world in general, it's hard for her to work up the proper levels of loathing for that special someone. She's more capable of harboring flushed feelings (she has them for at least one other troll and two humans in canon), but that's where her aforementioned bridge-burning tendencies become an issue. By the time she has a crush on someone, nine times out of ten she's already antagonized them to the point of wanting nothing to do with her. Emotionally confused young lady that she is, Vriska will sometimes flip back and forth between calignious and flushed romance if one or the other is left unrequited, leading to her antagonizing and seducing the same person in alternate moments. This makes pretty much nobody happy, and just leaves her more frustrated and spiteful.

Selphie Tilmitt

Name: Geoff
Personal LJ: [livejournal.com profile] drcanadianninja
Contact Info: Mod contact!

Character Name: Selphie Tilmitt
Character Series: Final Fantasy VIII (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VIII)
Background: Selphie (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Selphie)
Point in Canon: Just before Time Kompression.
Personality: Holy god, Selphie, lay off the sugar.

Selphie is in many ways an uncontrollable blur of energy. Carefree almost to a fault, her attitude is to act first, and then think about it later. Upon reaching a brand new home and life, she doesn't wait; she jumps in headfirst before anyone else has had a chance to breathe. As soon as she reaches Balamb Garden, she's running her own website, planning the Garden Festival, coercing others into said festival, all while still staying a successful student.

Much like her behavior, her preferred method of communication is to talk first, wait two beats, and then think about it, if she does at all. Combined with a dose of dark humor, things come out of her mouth that occasionally make others edge away, as evidenced when she hopes the plan is to "blow [the train] to smithereens with a rocket launcher". She also has a tendency to mash together words or create her own, such as her favored greeting, booyaka.

Selphie rarely finds herself in trobule of not making a friend. This isn't a symptom of her hyperactivity, but more because she cares about everyone around her. She has a way of reaching out to people and helping beyond comforting words.

Maintaining this carefree and happy appearance is very important to Selphie; when her home, Trabia Garden, had been targeted by missiles and subsequently destroyed, as soon as she arrives, she goes around assessing the damage and collaborating with survivors. At this point it's less about genuine emotion and more forcing herself to stand tall, to be their pillar of support.

As an aside, Selphie's really good with vehicles. She's an... interesting driver and ends up as the default pilot for the spaceship Ragnarok, but her true love is trains.

Sample Entry: Heeey, this isn't very funny! Who thought it was a good idea to just up and leave us without memories! What a super-duper-ultra-mega-bummer! Although I'm getting a bit of deja vu here...

Anyway, hi! No no no, that's too boring. It needs to pop! ...Boomshakalaka! No, that's too long. Nipah! Not bad, not bad! Ahoy-hoy! ...ew, no.

Wait wait! I got it! Booyaka! Whoo-hoo, perfect! So what's everyone up to? [She doesn't even wait for an answer before her attention is divided.] Oooh, a job board! What's on it... help take in some apples, find a goat, clean up some building... yes! I'll take them all!

Hei • Darker than Black (aka Din never stops changing his mind)

Character Name: Hei
Character Series: Darker than Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darker_than_black)
Background: Hei (http://darkerthanblack.wikia.com/wiki/Hei)

Personality:

Despite not being a true Contractor, Hei is easily mistaken for one before he even uses his powers. On the exterior, he is cold, reserved and seemingly unflappable. Hei is at least aware that his normal personality is less than amiable, so—for much of season one, especially—he adopts a different persona when his missions call for interactions among other human beings. During this act, Hei becomes friendly and relatable, and adopts an almost trademark sheepish grin. He appears naïve and oblivious, when in reality, he is neither. In this sense, he makes a good actor.

What keeps Hei from being a better actor, though, ties into the fact that he is socially stunted. When he’s trying to adopt his friendly persona, he has a tendency toward making awkward conversation, especially with women around his own age. Rather than being off-putting, though, his quirkiness actually gives him a strange appeal. After several interactions with his alias Li Sheng Shun, for example, police chief Kirihara develops feelings for him over the course of season one. These feelings are strong enough that she spends much of season two trying to track him down. Regardless, Hei has a fair grasp of what it means to act like a normal person, but there are subtleties he lacks.

In place of those subtleties, he makes up for other ones. Hei’s sense are sharp, and he is ever aware of his surroundings. He is quick on his feet, and rarely hesitant when it comes to doing what he thinks needs to be done. Concerning that, Hei’s goals and motivations are what separate him from a typical Contractor; instead of relying on cold logic, Hei is impulsive. This, ironically, makes him more of a challenge to deal with. His opponents—humans and Contractors alike—are often caught off guard and mystified by his decisions. In season one, Hei himself struggles with coming to grips with his identity, but his convictions and sense of self are strengthened after he chooses the “third option” inside the gate, saving both humans and Contractors.

Despite his callous exterior, Hei does have a heart. And—despite making the choice to save an enormous group of people—Hei’s compassion is typically seen on the individual level. In season one, this drive carries him to seek out his sister, whom he cares for deeply and lost track of after Heaven’s Gate disappeared. After she is revealed to be dead, his sense of caring lands primarily on Yin. They are seen to grow close during the Gaiden OVAs, and when Hei thinks he’s lost Yin forever, he takes to drinking and acting more outwardly cantankerous. This leads him to treat Suou poorly for much of season two—slapping her, yelling at her, etc.

It is revealed later, though, that Hei relates to Suou and comes to care for her. Hei tells Mao that he sees himself in Suou, who is a recently birthed Contractor, and is having identity problems similar to those that Hei had in season one. Still, Hei continues to have his own issues. Despite being told by everyone to kill Yin—and saying repeatedly himself that he would kill her—Hei cannot bring himself to do it.

Kousuke Asazuki || Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning

Name: Dani
Personal LJ: [livejournal.com profile] danidanidanica
Contact Info: AIM: greenmorningstar | email: existing_now@live.com | Plurk: DaniDaniDanica

Character Name: Kousuke Asazuki
Character Series: Wikipedia! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral:_The_Bonds_of_Reasoning)
Background: Also courtesy of Wikipedia! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spiral_characters#The_Blade_Children)
Point in Canon: Post-canon
Personality: Kousuke has lived through a lot of crap. When you live through the amounts of crap Kousuke has lived through, you learn a lot of things, get a little (or very) traumatized, and then some. To set the stage a bit, he has been on the run ever since an incident in middle school wherein he assaulted his teacher. Just to make sure we get this straight, this wasn’t a case of ‘pack some crackers and chocolates and toothpaste in a bag and run away’, or even ‘pack some crackers and chocolates and toothpaste in a bag and run from the cops’, but more along the lines of ‘don’t pack anything because you don’t have time for that shit, you’ve got to escape to and hide in various countries and learn to fight off members of an organization dedicated towards ending your existence that may attack you any day, at any time, with any number of people.’

Shockingly enough, this has impacted his personality in many ways! For one thing, Kousuke is very talented at surviving. He knows what he can live through, and more importantly, what he can’t. Falling from the third floor window? Sure, he’ll break some bones, but it’s better than facing off against a guy who can squeeze off six bullets within seconds. As long as he’s still breathing and in less mortal danger, Kousuke can and probably will take the opportunity immediately.

Escaping is not the only thing he’s good at, however. Thanks to another one of the Blade Children, Kousuke is more than capable of defending himself. As a matter of fact, if he feels there is enough of a threat, he will not hesitate to eliminate said threat. Sneakily enough that he won’t have even more people hunting him who know his face, but sometimes in stunningly sadistic ways. For example, when he is first introduced in the main series, it is after murdering a hospitalized man by binding him to his bed and then stabbing him in various nonlethal places, spattering blood all over the room, before finally cutting his throat. To say he can be slightly twisted is a bit of an understatement. In his defense, the man was behind efforts to have him killed, but he is still one to show unnecessary amounts of arrogant ruthlessness at times.

This personality quirk is in fact linked with more than just his past. In fact, it’s in his very genes thanks to his being one of the Blade Children – kids who, for plot reasons, are stronger, smarter, and more violent than normal humans. Kousuke is no exception, being a genius intelligence-wise and, well, a fighter. He has been able to enter an extremely prestigious school based on test-scores alone even after skipping most of middle school and his first year of high school. He is also known to dabble in psychology, but doesn’t usually bring it up unless there is a purpose to it. Such as, say, a game to the death.

Re: Kousuke Asazuki || Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning

[identity profile] danidanidanica.livejournal.com 2011-11-05 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of games to the death! He plays them. When ordered to. Except, the thing is, Kousuke doesn’t always play by the rules. This relates to his trust issues, which are an aftereffect of having so many people out to kill you for most of your life. He’ll follow orders from people… to an extent. If they seem stupid, no way. If they seem reasonable, fine, but he’ll make his own additions to the plan if he feels they would make it better for him personally. This leads him to very nearly break the rules binding him when he attempts to straight up kill the main character, no games involved. This is a problem because the Blade Children kind of need the main character if they want to be saved. Unfortunately for everyone else, Kousuke doesn’t exactly place his trust in some kid who can’t even believe in his own abilities, leading to near-death by bees. Building up trust with Kousuke takes a lot of effort – you have to prove, beyond a doubt, you are someone who knows what the hell they are doing. And even if you earn his trust, he might not necessarily like you. But it’s a start.

This does not by any means mean he is completely incapable of being a semi-decent person! In fact, he does feel remorse sometimes, particularly concerning his good childhood friend Ryoko Takamachi. And by good friend I mean that girl who he might possibly be totally whipped for. Point is, he isn’t exactly proud of his kill record, especially around her. He knows it’s wrong to have stained his hands so deeply in blood. But at the same time, he believes there is no avoiding it, to the point of giving up on himself. He knows the Blade Children are cursed to slaughter people, a fate which most of his companions wish to avoid – Kousuke still believes to some extent that it is impossible to overturn this, and though he works with the others, his hopes aren’t exactly high.

He can also, surprisingly enough, show affection. If he likes you enough, he’ll make frequent visits to the hospital, maybe even buy a person a small puzzle to keep them occupied while waiting to get better. If he really likes you, he’ll offer himself as a shield against bullets. At the very least, he’ll act a little less antagonistic towards those he’s somewhat okay with.

And now that I’ve built up all of his cool points… now would be an absolutely fantastic time to mention just how much of a loser Kousuke can be! Seriously. While he definitely has his moments, such as dragging an enemy into the blast radius of a bomb in order to save his friends, the series just loves to make him the butt of as many jokes as possible. Bonus points if it involves him being hurt in some amusing way, such as having a door slammed in his face. (http://www.mangareader.net/1111-40784-21/spiral-suiri-no-kizuna/chapter-21.html)
