Character Name: Rin Tohsaka

Character Series: Fate/Stay Night @ T-M Wiki

Background: Tohsaka Rin @ T-M Wiki. Unlimited Blade Works the route is known as Rin's heroine route. There's also a movie that doesn't seem to have a good write up that references the anime and the UBW route. But hey, if you want a summary in less than 5 minutes, this AMV right here hits the spot.
CHILDHOOD;
The first child of the fourth generation of a magi family formed only two hundred years ago leaves a lot of pressure. Life is as normal as can be for her: she studies magecraft and martial arts training in private under her father's mentoring and spends the rest of the time with her precious younger sister, Sakura. While the path of a magus is not an easy one, she found solace in her sister's presence, but that was short lived as her father allows their 'rival' family to adopt her. With the realization that she must become superior to Sakura in every way or run the risk of being the rival in the shadows, Rin picks up on her studies. There's pressure on all angles on her life that increase tenfold with the sudden death of her father when she's just a young child. With her mother's sanity lost, her sister now belonging to the Matou family, and her father gone, there's only one individual left to be her legal guardian: Kirei Kotomine (who, unsurprisingly, is the man who killed her father). Despite all of these heartbreaking incidents in her life, she only finds strength in them, refusing to break down or cry even at her father's funeral, displaying a maturity unheard of for her age. There is only succession on her mind to carry her on through these troubling times - she will surpass her father and make him proud.
SCHOOL IDOL;
"Good looking, smart, athletic, and faultless. She's intelligent, well mannered, and modest about her looks. People say she's the ideal woman.
So it hardly needs to be said that the guys at my school treat her like an idol.
Though in Tohsaka's case, she's so perfect that she's considered unreachable."

Keeping her sorcery a secret at school is a must, as well as the rest of her duties, so while at school Rin adapts a different personality. A modest and pleasant individual who is admired by just about everyone. Female students look up to her as a role model and male students admire her in all ways, but don't dare approach her for a relationship as she will shoot them down bluntly. Allowing friends in is a weakness as they will discover just what she is and may actually be used against her during a crucial point of the Holy Grail War. She refuses to join clubs and take part in after school activities for this purpose, remaining an enigma only be desired.

THE FIFTH HOLY GRAIL WAR;
With the beginning of this war comes a lot of responsibility: for one, Rin is the charge of Fuyuki City which is the hosting grounds for this war. Due to this, she needs not only the most outstanding Servant at her side, but she must spend the next few weeks of her life being devoted to this war. Overlooking everything; thankfully, she has the assistance of her legal guardian, Kirei Kotomine, but even so - this is her responsibility and her's alone. In her impatience, she summons a different Servant than the one she was aiming for. Archer, instead of the preferred Saber. Later on, she figures out just why it was she ended up with Archer instead of Saber; it was the result of a miracle she performs on the very first night of the Holy Grail War.

It doesn't take long for the rest of the Servants to arrive: in fact, the first fight of the war is fought between Rin's Archer and Lancer. It is cut short due to the pair noticing a third party and Lancer obeying the rules of the war (to eliminate any witnesses). This third party is an idiot student at the school by the name of Shirou Emiya and Lancer makes quick work of him, piercing him with Gáe Bolg. No wound received from the cursed spear can ever heal, but Rin defies all logic by using her precious family memento (the necklace) to perform the miracle of repairing his heart. An impossible feat that gets her a scholarship into the Clock Tower after the war. In a rush, she abandons it at his side to leave with Archer. While returning to her home, she's attacked once again by Saber who only wants to protect her Master, but stops when he instructs her.

Realizing that Shirou Emiya is her Master and knows nothing about the war he's suddenly a part of (leaving her very confused as to how he managed a pact with the most outstanding Servant class), she escorts him to the church so he could speak with Kirei Kotomine. Once Shirou confirms that he is going to remain in the war (much to Rin's disappointment for several reasons), they escort each other back home. It is then they are attacked by Illyasviel and her impressive Servant, Berserker. He is chased off with an impressive attack made by Archer that surprisingly almost takes out Shirou and Saber as well (it is questionable whether or not that Rin could have been hurt during it - she was caught in it, but had the warning to move). The next day at school, she demands that Shirou unhands his Command Seals to her so that she could become Saber's Master. After all, her priority is to have the best Servant to help her win this war (for her personal reasons). Plus, after the engagement with Berserker, she feels even more pressure to be on top of things. Their pathetic spat is interrupted when the school is attacked by another Servant: Rider. Working together, the two repel the invasive Servant. At this point, they decide it is beneficial if they work together.

Several incidents occurred shortly after; Rin dreamed of a hero who was betrayed by his ideals, Shirou was lulled in by Caster in an attempt to take his command seals (by this point, you're understanding that Saber is a highly sought after servant), Archer tried to kill Shirou, and Rider being killed. By this time, the distance between Archer and his master had become more and more noticeable. In order to work together better, Rin decided to stay at Shirou's home permanently.

After a date together (did I mention the two are growing closer? oops~), they returned home to find that Taiga had been taken hostage by Caster. The aftermath of this incident was that Shirou lost Saber as his servant to Caster and Rin insisted that she and her Archer would go fight Caster. Being the idiot that he is, Shirou insisted on coming along. It was here that the pinnacle of Archer and Rin's relationship occurred, in which he betrayed her and defected to Caster's side. He moved in to strike at her, but Shirou saved her life. Being dismissed as a lack of threat, the pair decided to seek out Illya and her Berserker to assist them. This was widely regarded as a bad move, as they were too late. Both the master and servant were defeated easily by that other!Archer, Gilgamesh. Thankfully for them, there was still a servant around that had nothing else better to do with his time. With Lancer on their side, the pair moved back to the church to conduct business. As Archer fought Lancer, this allowed Shirou and Rin to move inside to fight off against Kuzuki and Caster. In a stroke of genius, Rin was able to defeat Caster by feigning as though she was a wounded gazelle, and attacked with her martial arts the moment Caster approached. However, Caster decided this was a good time to just ask Saber to handle it for her.

It was brief though as Archer showed up and took out those two, revealing that he was only using Caster to free himself of Rin. You know, so he could do what he wanted to do this entire time - kill Shirou Emiya. After he trapped Rin to keep her out of harm's way, Archer moved in to try to kill Shirou. The idiot put up a good fight, but was easily overpowered by a servant. Free of her pact with Archer, Rin began a new one with Saber. After accepting the pact, Saber protected Shirou to the point where Archer was forced to flee. He doesn't leave alone though as he abducted Rin easily. As a hostage, Rin was unable to do anything useful except nearly get violated by one of her classmates who had a sick fascination with her. Archer protected her and informed Shinji that she was to be safe until morning, because that was how long he told Shirou he'd keep her safe. Morning came and Lancer moved in to try to rescue Rin, only to run into Kirei. He told Lancer to kill Rin, but Lancer refused, saying it would have to be a command before he did so. Kirei then commanded Lancer to kill himself instead. Piercing him, Lancer also took out Kirei and scared Shinji off AGAIN before he could harm Rin. She insisted on trying to save Lancer, but he informed her that no one could survive a strike from his spear (which is ironic since Rin performed the miracle of saving Shirou's life).

The war concludes with a huge fight between Gilgamesh and Shirou while Rin tries to free Shinji from the embodiment of the Grail. Yes, she took the step to save someone who would have violated her if given the chance to. Archer asks her to watch out for his younger self in the hopes that she'll keep him out of trouble, leaving her with a smile on his face.

ENDING;
Due to the unique ending of this Holy Grail War, Rin keeps Saber bound to this realm by having her as a familiar instead of a Servant. She is able to do this with Shirou's "assistance".

Personality:
A magus is clever in the manner that they never reveal their true selves easily. They keep up a facade as an additional security precaution so it shouldn't come as a shock that Rin's outside personality is surprisingly deceptive. As a student, Rin is considered nothing less than an idol - admired, desired, and with her fair share of enemies. With the illusion of perfectly without any flaws due to her excellent grades and her fit physical condition, most students are afraid to approach her. Cold, but in a formal manner, Rin cares little for companionship during her time at school. She goes out of her way particularly to avoid making friends - for example, she turns down being a part of the student council despite how good such a position would look on her records. Those who gain the courage are instantaneously shot down without mercy. After all, what good is a guise if you let someone get close?

It's no good at all. In fact, it's pretty useless when you end up with a persistent servant or whenever you fall in love. In the case of Shirou Emiya, he discovers quite early on that the Rin Tohsaka he admired is nothing but a sham ('Even when I put it nicely, she's sour, cranky, unapproachable, and she's so different that I want to scream out'). She's hesitant to allow people to get close to her. Solitude has been her life as a magus for so long and permitting people to get close is a weakness. She's vulnerable (not that she would ever confess to such a thing). Her true personality is much more demonic and witchly as Shirou often thinks. Antagonizing those who get close to her, she's rather mischievous and takes delight in embarrassing others. Asserting her dominance in this manner leads back into her better-than-you attitude she has as a idol as a link to show she's not completely flawless in her guise. That is okay though, because whenever you turn the teasing back on her... well, her major character trait shines through.

This girl's distinguished personality trait can be described in a single trope. Rin is one of the notorious characters for being tsundere. As her relationship with Shirou grows, the behavioral traits of a tsundere make themselves more and more obvious. As the Second Owner to Fuyuki City, it is the charge of her family to keep watch over the area. You can assume she's rather disciplined when she puts her mind to it due not only to her proficiency with magecraft, but with her skills in Chinese martial arts. She won't hesitate to use her magic to assist her in combat, whether it's to reinforce her body to go beyond the limit or to initiate a brilliant strategy. As an Average One, she's valued by the Mage's Association and is quite the important person in the magical world, to the point where she is able to bring Shirou (a worthless magus in all actuality) with her to London. She's not a flawless magus though. Despite all of her brain power, she still has the horrible habit of making mistakes at the most crucial time.

Beneath all of that resides a dormant part of her personality that isn't shown enough until it is nearly too late. Loyal to her family name, Rin's desire to participate in the Holy Grail War is not one for herself. After all, she has no wishes for the Grail. So why would she engage in such a competition? Because at one point, her father wanted to win the Grail, so she believes that in winning it, she would be fulfilling his wishes from the grave. Her loyal connection with her father is strong even though he's passed. In fact, while she's fiercely loyal to her father, she's rather obliviousdismissive in general when it comes to her sister. Thinking of certain things (such as the price of being the Matou heir) would be too painful for her; she would either have to accept Sakura's torment or rescue her. Neither option is acceptable for Rin as a magus so she can only watch from a distance.

There remain a few other things to mention. For example, Rin's ignorance when it comes to technology. As a magus, most of what she needs is readily available to her through magical means. She can barely operate her alarm clock, much less a VCR, and it'd be the cruelest form of torture to put her in front of a computer. As a clash to her perfect image, she's grumpy and in a daze in the morning. She's notoriously lazy and would sleep in (or lounge around in her pajamas) if given the opportunity. She's a firm believer of 'Equivalent Exchange' or so she preaches - she rarely actually follows it as she's seen as a good nature person who gives aid willingly. Oh? And if she smiles at you? Run.

Sample Entry: Anything found in [livejournal.com profile] infinitemana and [livejournal.com profile] crosses for additional samples.

[ A lethargic sigh is the greeting she gives to those who may be listening in, blue eyes void of the usual fire they retain. Instead, they are dull, almost as though she was disheartened. Ah, but that's why she's making this message isn't she? Hardly one to talk to others without a purpose, her presence a lingering one in the shadows. ]

You know, I've been here for a few months already and I have yet to discover anything beneficial for escape. I'm not ungrateful or anything of the sort, I just feel as though there's something important waiting for me back home. Wherever home is. I recall hearing about Second Magic some place. [ Eyes widen slightly as the realization that her audience may not know what that term means. ] That's the magic related to parallel worlds and transportation between them. Among other things that are very fuzzy. It isn't as though I forgot! I just don't want to talk so much about things that no one can understand!

[ A brief pause as she reconsiders her words, pulling her lower lip into her mouth to chew, a pensive demeanor overtaking her facial features. ]

I'm starting to think that the longer we remain in this place, the more of our memories we regain. I suppose a survey is in order then, no? [ Determination flashes briefly, the fire igniting once more in her irises. ] Let's get to it then. I want everyone to tell me how long they've been here and a guess of how much you've managed to remember. Also, note if you remembered anything while doing something specifically. That would be useful information to log, wouldn't it? [ Flipping her hair over her shoulder with her free hand, she gives a nod. ]

By the way, don't think of this as an invitation to tell me your entire life story. I don't really care for such things and if you bore me, I'll just hang up on you. I'll even block you if you think twice about it! Um. I can do that, can't I? Such things were spoken in passing, but I don't really know how to work this stupid thing. Well, I'll just throw it into the ocean if you bug me! So don't think about it, alright?
